Alberta World Cup 2012 presents exciting opportunity to cheer on Canadian Olympians and other international elite
Canmore, AB – With only two short months to go, cross country ski fans across Canada are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the world’s best cross country skiers. From December 13 – 16, 2012, athletes from across the globe will descend on the Canmore Nordic Centre to race at the Alberta World Cup.
One of two Canadian stops on the 2012/13 FIS World Cup race circuit, the Canmore event will showcase 200 athletes representing more than 20 countries, positioning the Alberta World Cup 2012 as one of the premier international cross country ski events of the season.
In addition to generous financial support from the private sector, the Alberta World Cup 2012 has been made possible in part through a contribution of $675,000 by the Government of Alberta and Travel Alberta; along with $250,000 by the Government of Canada.
“The Government of Alberta is proud to join with the organizing committee, the many corporate sponsors and the hundreds of dedicated volunteers in support of an event that will showcase the rich culture of our province,” stated the Honourable Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture.
“The Harper Government is proud to support the FIS World Cup Cross Country event in Canmore,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport). “Hosting this exciting event provides our Canadian athletes with the chance to compete against the world’s best right here at home while providing a significant economic boost to the local community. I congratulate the organizers and volunteers on continuing to make this event a success for our athletes and the region.”
Alberta World Cup race organizers have focused on creating an exciting three days of racing for the 2012 event. With a number of head-to-head races planned, spectators will have the opportunity to see the world’s best as they race side by side for the finish.
“We have held this event in 2005, 2008 and 2010” said Norbert Meier, Alberta World Cup Society President. “Athletes, coaches and fans from all over the world consistently comment on the quality of our races and the enthusiasm of our volunteers. We’re grateful to have a world-class facility, a very supportive community and committed sponsors. We’re proud to host this event and showcase our sport, our community and our province to the world”
“Alberta is thrilled to welcome the world during the 2012 Alberta World Cup at our outstanding Canmore Nordic Centre,” said the Honourable Christine Cusanelli, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “With over 200 athletes from 20 countries participating, spectators will be treated to a dazzling array of athleticism from the very best cross-country skiers in the world.”
