This art piece was created by local artist Lesley Russell as part of the Town of Canmore Art Walk in the Woods 2020 – a collection of six temporary art works from various local artists that followed the Legacy Trail from the Bow River to the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park to celebrate the 2020 Alberta Cross Country Skiing event. The World Cup had to be cancelled at the last minute, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Lesley Russel’s “Motivation” captures so many of the things that go into hosting an international cross country skiing event in Canmore.  We are inspired by the athletes who push themselves to the limit, we are proud of how our incredible team of volunteers push themselves to provide the best racing environment and we are privileged to be able to do all of this at the Canmore Nordic Centre.  The confluence of inspirational art and world-class sport seems to us to sum up Canmore perfectly.”, said Norbert Meier,  Events Director, from the Alberta World Cup Society.

“It is an honour and a privilege to have my Public Art installation “Motivation“ on display at the prestigious Canmore Nordic Centre, perfectly located next to the Bill Warren Training Centre. I could not dream of a better location for this installation to motivate, focus and help push our amazing athletes, locals and visitors. I am passionate regarding the use of Public Art to create thought provoking work that sparks emotion, understanding and dialogue within the community.  Thank you kindly to everyone who made this possible,” said Lesley Russell

“Motivation” is a reminder to take a moment to contemplate what gives you the Motivation to Push yourself further, whether in your sporting endeavours, work or personal life. As we start to return to our new normal post-COVID-19, we would like to invite Canmorites to visit “Motivation” at the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park.
